Letter from Brig

Sm BVOFrom Brig, June 30, 2016- Ten years ago, I set out to open the coolest looking salon in Simi Valley. I knew exactly what I wanted: red styling chairs, a turquoise blue wall & definitely a swordfish over the shampoo area. p!ay hair lounge (p!ay, because I wanted to say I was going to “play” not work.) opened for business on July 1, 2006 at the start of a three month remodel. From day one we had the support of Bumble & bumble and have exclusively loved their products. I believed that if p!ay looked cool, the people would come. What I know now is that no matter what salon you are apart of; it is truly the heart of your salon that makes it special. The hairstylists, salon support staff & clients are that heart. I am so absolutely beyond words about the unique individuals that have supported my salon dream this past decade.   As a creative professional, I needed the inspiring environment, but it is the experience we have been able to deliver to so many people that is most important and rewarding. We have the kindest clients visit us daily, making our lives beautiful and fun. The stylists and team have allowed me to trip and get back up over and over again. p!ay has taught me that perfection is overrated and apologies are necessary. We have been together through heartaches and celebrations and I have always known that they have my back, front and all 5 sides!

I planned to be a salon owner for ten years. Never being one to stray from a goal, it is with a great sense of accomplishment that I announce the passing of the torch to the most capable person I know, Samantha Swanson.   Samantha started as a Client Coordinator eight years ago while attending cosmetology school. Next she assisted me and then started behind a chair building a solid clientele. She even moved into my apartment and took over my life for FIVE WEEKS!!!… while I kibitzed around on a little reality competition show called SHEAR GENIUS. Good thing I won, or I would have never been able to face her. Things at p!ay weren’t even half as together as they are now! She has been our Salon Director for over four years and a huge part of our “heart”. She is smart, beautiful, funny and most importantly willing to try new things. I am excited to support Samantha as she takes p!ay hair lounge into the future. I appreciate each and every one of you that has been apart of p!ay these last several years. It has been unbelievable.   I haven’t had a day where someone didn’t ask me “Is there anything I can do to help you?” That is how I define success. It has never been about a dollar amount for me. Without question I am remaining at p!ay hair lounge. I will proudly support Samantha as she enters the most exciting time of her life! I guarantee that!! Even if she chooses to rename it “Sam’s Shampoo Shack” (Just kidding.)

 Sincerely, Brig Van Osten
